Day
Care Scholarships

To Our Day Care Providers:
We plan to award one-week day care scholarships to families who live in Attleboro, North Attleboro, Mansfield and Norton. The scholarships will be paid directly to the child care provider and are presented as a surprise to the recipient on the day the tuition is usually paid. The criteria for selection will be needs-based; however, families who are awarded a scholarship cannot be receiving any state or federal aid (i.e., food stamps, fuel assistance, sliding scale day care fees). The purpose of the scholarships is to bolster working parents who might need a little extra help.

Nominations of families who would benefit from a scholarship are encouraged as well as families applying on their own. All applications will be kept confidential. Right click on these links and select "Save Target As" to save application to your computer:

Attention Non Profit Groups !

As many of you know, the Attleboro Area Council for Children, Inc. has continually raised its own funds.  Not an easy job when you have no paid staff, limited printing and postage costs.  We know that many of you have experienced tremendous cutbacks in state funded programs.

For our citizen based volunteer group that advocates for children, we wanted to share an idea that we have been using successfully in keeping money in our Council accounts. Since we rely heavily on our volunteer operated Council, we have participated in the easiest event possible. For our citizen based volunteer group that advocates for children we wanted to share an idea that we have been using successfully in keeping money in our Council accounts.  Since we have no paid staff and rely heavily on our volunteer operated Council, we have participated in the easiest event possible.

Our long time friend, Dave Kane (at left) created a great dinner theater concept called Just for FunDS.

The dinner is prepared on site at a dining facility.  Dave Kane provides the entertainment with great audience participation.  All we do is sell tickets for $30, we keep $10 from every ticket we sell and the best part is that it is not held on just one night.  Since this is a weekly fundraising show, one week you can sell 20 tickets and you have already made $200!  If you sell 100 tickets you already have made $1000 with no effort other than selling the tickets.  You get to offer different dates to those interested.

It has been our experience that if we share the weekly availability of the Just for FunDS show, we all benefit. We get a full room of fun entertainment; offer a nice meal and evening out for our many benefactors.

If you would like to find out more details about this fundraising effort, please contact us at kelly@councilforchildren.org or by phone at 508-226-2336. We look forward to hearing from you.

Child Passenger Safety

latch.gif (4045 bytes)We want to be able to insure that every child in our area is riding in a safe car seat. Sometimes, economics make it impossible for a child to be properly restrained and safely transported in a vehicle. We work with local police to do awareness spot checks. When children are not restrained properly we want to know why. We are working hard and need to do more to make sure that every child is riding safe. Click here for more information.

CAR-SAFE Line is a toll free phone line for Massachusetts residents who have questions about passenger safety and related Massachusetts laws. Staff can answer specific questions about passenger safety, distribute educational materials, and refer callers to local resources. To contact the CAR-SAFE Line call 800-CAR-SAFE:  (800-227-7233).

Christmas is for Kids!

Xmastree.gif (12468 bytes)For nearly a quarter of a century, the Council has sponsored its only gift-giving program called Christmas is for Kids. This program provides a happy Christmas to children who would otherwise go without a gift on Christmas Day.

Over the years, many thousands of children have benefited from the generosity of people like you, who choose to make a difference in a child's life.

The Nicky O Foundation

Nick O'Neill died in the tragic nightclub fire in Warwick, RI in February, 2003. Nick was only 18 years old and he is the son of Dave Kane, one of the Council's long time board members. At the request of Nicky's parents, the Nicky O Foundation was created in his honor.

Music was a big part of Nick O'Neill's life and his outgoing personality touched the lives of many others. As a fitting tribute, the Nicky O' Foundation was created to recognize the musical talents of young people who otherwise would have no opportunity to pursue their musical aspirations and assist them in realizing their dreams.

The Foundation raises funds that will provide scholarships in the music and performing arts to talented young musicians and performers. These donated funds will be used for, but not limited to, the financing of music lessons, and the rental or purchase of musical instruments.

A special CD of Nick's music is available through the Council for Children. This very special disc contains original songs composed and performed by Nick and his band, Shryne. Proceeds of the sale of this CD directly benefit the Nicky O Foundation. Please contact the Council at 508-226-2336 to purchase your copy. Or send us an email to find out more!

Nick's CD is available on on auction on EBAY!  Please spread the word!!!!

 Identifying Benefits For Families

The Council reviews all applications received from our Christmas is for Kids program to see how we can better help families identify services such as food stamps, fuel assistance, medical insurance, etc. to help them with their basic needs.

The Council for Children has compiled a Resource Guide of local programs that you can apply for, if you meet ther eligibility requirements. Please click here to view the list.

Bears on Board

Teddy-Bear.gif (34930 bytes)The Council for Children sponsors this program where new teddy bears, under 12" are placed in Police and Fire Vehicles, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital ER and Pediatric Unit and Juvenile Court in all of Southeastern MA offices. The new teddy bear is used by personnel to calm children who are found in stressful and sometimes violent situations from motor vehicle accidents, a hospital stay to proceedings at the various Juvenile Courts in Southeastern MA.

The new teddy bear is the child’s to keep and love. The Attleboro Sun Chronicle is the program's official drop off point for those wishing to donate bears. For the past three years the newspaper has offered it’s South Main Street lobby as the collection point and has collected over 2300 bears.

Happy Birthday Backpack Program - HBBP

The Council for Children does not want a child to go without a party and gift on their special day.  In October 2004, the Council entered their Happy Birthday Backpack Project for USA Weekend: Make A Difference Day, a national day of caring.   Many caring community individuals and groups have continued to make these Birthday packs available to agencies that serve our children.

The HBBP Committee is always seeking donations of:

  • cake mix, frosting, candles
  • party decorations,
  • streamers,  balloons
  • plates, cups, napkins, plastic ware
  • party invitations
  •  party favors enough for at least 6 children

AND

One gift certificate for birthday child:

  • Movie Passes
  •  McDonald's
  •  Pizza Certificates
  •  Small gift certificate

Agencies can access these Happy Birthday Packs for clients in need.  Parents must be referred by an agency in order to receive a HBBP.  The group needs the request well in advance of the child’s birthday.  Since we have no paid staff, an e-mail is the quickest method to access delivery of a specified Backpack. E-Mail:  councilforkids@aol.com.

If you should have any questions or would like to obtain backpacks , please feel free to contact us.  Backpacks are in age/gender categories:  Ages 3-6,  7-12, 13-18

Agencies, faith community, please feel free to share this information with others who serve children in:

  • Attleboro
  • North Attleboro
  • Mansfield
  • Norton
  • Seekonk
  • Rehoboth
